Fenway, Red Sox

As I wrote previously, our family returned to Fenway a few weekends ago (the family has been going there since at least the late 40s). We tried to see the ‘new’ Fenway tour, which turned out to be nothing of the sort. Then we came back the next day to attend a game and to introduce another generation to the park and to the ‘bricks’ that we have contributed to the entrance at Gate B.

Here are some of Ellen’s photos:

Two Free July 4th Nats’ Tickets & Other Baseball Notes

Marlins' Park, Nats, Red Sox, Two Free Nats' Tickets, Yunkees

This and That on My ‘Baseball’ Mind:

1. Free Tickets:

I find myself unable to use two good Nats’ tickets for Wednesday, July 4 at 11:05 against the Giants. The seats are on the first base side, about 20 rows off the field, just to the right of the catcher. If you’re interested, first to contact me either by leaving a Comment below or writing me at Samesty84@gmail.com gets the tickets.

Something’s Wrong Here

Don Orsillo, Fenway, Jerry Remy, NESN, Red Sox

While awaiting the righting of the Red Sox shaky ship, I have two complaints that ostensibly don’t have anything to do with their current baseball struggles, tho on reflection, maybe there is a connection.

First, Touring Fenway:

I wrote a couple of years ago (A Modest Proposal) that I thought the Fenway Park tours were sadly lacking, and the one at the Nationals’ new park in Washington was far superior.

Therefore, I was delighted when Jere Smith of the good Sox blog A Red Sox Fan from Pinstripe Territory, alerted me to a Red Sox announcement that there was to be a new, improved tour beginning this, the 100th year, of Fenway.

“I Blame You”

So last night I had this IM exchange with daughter Elizabeth after an excruciating three hour, 2-1 Sox victory over the Marlins:

Elizabeth: Get home OK?
Richard: Almost. You?
E: Yup!
R: Home, finally.
E: Did you get lost? Easier to sit in traffic when it’s a win.
R. Not lost. Took forever to get out of the garage. I was thinking the same thing about it being easier to sit…Why do we care so much about them (i.e., the wins, the Sox, etc.)?
E: I blame you.
R: ☺

I admit to committing this transgression on my daughter(s).

It didn’t look or feel as if it would be a 4 hour and 15 minute game.

In fact, the first seven innings were played in less than two hours.

I looked at the clock on the scoreboard and thought, “I oughta be home by 10 PM, beat my curfew, and probably be asleep shortly thereafter, as is my usual custom.”

Free Ticket to Fenway, See Sox vs. O's This Thurs.

I have one ticket for someone who wants to join me to see the Sox at Fenway this Thursday, June 7 at 7:10.

The Sox play the Orioles, and Clay Buchholz, who once threw a no-hitter against them (Sept. 1, 2007), is pitching. And altho he’s not been lights out this year, he does seem to be pitching well of late.

And if you can’t attend, perhaps you know someone who might enjoy Fenway. I’m not opposed to making a new friend (if said ‘new friend’ is an O’s fan, or even worse, a Yunkee’s fan, I’ll still sit with him/her, tho I/m likely to make snide remarks now and then).

First person to contact me on this site or by email (Samesty84@gmail.com) gets the ticket.

The Three Toughest Outs in Baseball?

Joe Posnanski, Toughest Outs in Baseball

What are the hardest three outs to get in baseball?

I suspect if asked this question, you would say, “the final three outs of a game, those in the 9th inning.”

That’s what I always thought. It’s what the announcers always say.

But you’d be wrong.

Here is a list of the remaining games that are available for you to choose from to join me to watch the Nats in 2012.

One seat for each game is free to you, except you may have to buy me a hot dog and/or a beer and put up with my companionship for the duration of the game.

If you might want two tickets to any of the games listed below, I may be open to selling those to you. Note that the Friday, Sept. 7 Marlins game is definitely for sale.

Blogger Nails Sox Sports’ Writers

17 Tuesday Apr 2012

For some time now I have been annoyed by various (Boston) sports’ writers who seem to me delighted to create controversy, stoke ‘controversy,’ and generally confuse good sport’s reporting with manufactured controversies.

I know Boston writers have a history of being tough on the Sox (Teddy made it easy for them), but I’m not talking about that so much as the ‘manufactured’ controversies, the over interpreting, the seeming delight in augmenting even the smallest issue into a major bruhaha (sp?).

The latest along this line is the Bobby V comment on Youk and the fallout resulting. We all know that Bobby talks too much. But so do the (Boston) sports’ writers who need controversy to fill their columns.

I don’t plan to comment on each and every so called controversy this season, but I just read on a friend’s blog what I think is all that needs to be said about Bobby & Youk and whatever else will come along along these lines this season.

Check out what Jere Smith wrote last night in his A Red Sox Fan From Pinstripe Territory blog: An Elvis Man Should Love It.

He nails it.

The New MoneyBall

Now that the season is underway, and especially since most Sox fans have put down sharp objects and stepped away from high places, we can settle into the season and try to enjoy the sport with all its infinite variety.

I’m always looking for articles and discussions about baseball that go beyond the daily scores and the media hype that many writers seem to get paid to produce, articles that add to my understanding of the game.

A few weeks ago I came across this Forbes magazine article by Tom Van Riper, The New Moneyball. Take a look at it.

When you finish reading the article, be sure to click on the link at the end of the third page, Special Report: The Business Of Baseball 2012, to see what your baseball team and all the other teams are worth.

Moneyball it is.

Angels Will Beat Phillies in the WS

2012 World Series, Angels, baseball, NYY, Phillies, Red Sox, Washington Nationals

As I prepare to head to the Nationals’ home opener today, I ‘note’ that my beloved Sox are in last place in the AL East with a 1-5 record, an improvement over last years opening of 0-6.

I also note that the Nationals are tied for first in their Senior Circuit Division with a record of 4-2. While the Nats, or any other team, could never replace my Sox infatuation/obsession, it’s nice to consider that my ‘home’ team may be competitive this year.

Anyway, neither the Sox nor the Nats seemed to impress the contestants in this years MillersTime Baseball Contests.

Here, then, the wisdom of those who succumbed to my endless nagging to participate in the six contests:

Orioles on Top? Nats Next to Last?

baseball, Money in Baseball & Politics

Finally those data geeks at The Sunlight Foundation (transparency: that’s where my wife works) have done something I can understand.

They’ve taken a look at how much each baseball team is spending in the political arena. And there are some surprises.

The Yanks are not even in the top five. The Nats, who play in the nation’s capital, are next to last in giving.

And who gives the most?

The Orioles.

What’s that about?

To learn more about how the MLB teams are spending their money and to see a list of where your team stands in political money giving (which no doubt comes out of the money you pay for tickets), see Major League Fundraising.

Join Me for a Red Sox Preseason Game in DC

21 Wednesday Mar 2012

Posted by Richard in Go Sox

I have an extra ticket for a Tuesday, April 3, 3:05 PM preseason Red Sox vs Nats game in DC.

First person to claim the ticket, either by leaving a message in the Comment section or emailing me (samesty84@gmail.com), gets to join me and buy me a hot dog (Kosher).

Also, I am part of three different ticket groups with the last drawing Mar. 31. I will be listing games to join me and also a few games where folks can have two tickets if I cannot attend.

Preference goes to folks who have joined the 2012 MillersTime Baseball Contests, tho that is not a must.

If you have a particular game you are interested in attending with me, let me know now.

If you have a game you know now that you’d like two tickets for, also let me know now, and I’ll put you first on a list (sometimes for free, sometimes hoping for a reimbursement).

Anyway, I will be announcing the games I do have shortly after Mar.31. So check in if you’re interested.
